Canadian historian Charles Perry Stacey described the War of 1812 as one where the memories of it make everyone happy. He wrote:
“The Americans think they whipped the British. Canadians think of it equally pridefully as a war of defense which their brave fathers, side by side, turned back the massed might of the United States and saved the country from conquest. And the English are happiest of all because they don’t even know it happened.”
